Accessibility

We want everyone to be able to use this website, including people who use assistive technology, navigate by keyboard, or need to change how content is displayed.

Our commitment

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. These are the internationally recognised standard for accessible websites.

Current status

This website partially conforms with WCAG 2.2 level AA. The known exceptions are listed below.

What we've done

We built accessibility into the design of this site rather than adding it afterwards. In particular:

  • Text colours are chosen to meet contrast requirements against every background they appear on. One brand colour was kept out of body text entirely because it didn’t meet them
  • Links are marked by an underline as well as colour, so they don’t rely on colour alone
  • Pages use a proper heading structure, so screen reader users can move between sections
  • Body text is set at a comfortable line length, and the site reflows when zoomed
  • Form fields have visible labels, and required fields are marked in words rather than by colour
  • Form fields show a visible focus indicator when selected by keyboard
  • Links to other pages on this site open in the same window; only links to other websites open a new one
  • Our cookie banner makes declining as easy as accepting

Known issues

Where we fall short

We know about the following issues and are working on them:

  • Some small labels are set in a compact typeface at a small size, and may be hard to read without zooming
  • This site is built on a third-party platform, and some of its built-in components, including parts of the navigation menu and form validation messages, are outside our direct control
  • Our enquiry form doesn’t tell browsers what each field is for, so they may not offer to fill in your details automatically. This is a limitation of our website platform.
